I am very happy somebody realizes the absolute truth and speaks about it clearly. Imagine how many things we throw away everyday in order to buy the "new" thing. We pollute the planet and we buy happiness for a very short time... This is the digital world, a world of consumption without stop. At least here somebody shows clearly what a product several decades old can do... Analog darkroom even when the results are not to today's standards give me the pride that I own a picture, with my Canon d-SLR I never had this feeling. With my 30-40-50 years old SLR equipment I am absolutely sure that I will take the picture. With the Canon I never know when it will be the last shutter click ...

Keep saying the truth about photography and about our stupid, greedy society.

              My kind Regards

Great post! I just came across it via Google.

Have you looked into b-mobile? (http://www.bmobile.ne.jp/market/index.html)
I recently found out about them from a friend... they're basically a Docomo signal re-seller with competitive prices.

My friend subscribes to a 980 yen per month plan for unlimited... but before you get too excited, the drawback at this price is the super slow speed (max 300kbps). According to my friend, mail and simple browsing is fine but streaming and whatnot are next to impossible on a smartphone (friend uses a Toshiba Regza, originally on Docomo)

They do have "iOS targetted speed" plans (whatever that means) in unlimited or data quota varities, and you can get discounts on unlimited data plans if you prepay for 6 or 12 month charges. Basic unlimited data for one month is 5,280 yen. Don't know what the actual speed is... but I imagine it has to be faster than the 300kbps mentioned above... I'm guessing same as standard FOMA?

Anyway, just thought I'd throw that out there.

You can turn off Cellular Data on any iPhone. This would accomplish what you're describing, but I think even the base usage charge would be more than 1000 yen, though it would depend on your plan.

WIth the iphone 4S, is it possible to set the settings on the phone so that one can you use the docomo network just for voice and switch off the cellular data services and only use Wifi for data? I was hoping that then your docomo bill will only be around 1000JPY (and if you wanted to do data then just use the available Wifi) Do you know if this works?

Downloading of the image is not necessarily copyright violation or stealing. What about "fair use"? As part of the government granting you the privileged of exclusive control of your work, they also require that the public be provided "fair use" of the work. A list of possible examples include: commentary, criticism, news reporting, research, teaching, library archiving and scholarship. A content owner cannot remove the public's right to fair use.

If someone downloads your image and publishes it in a magazine that is easily a violation of your rights and can be considered "theft". If I download your pictures for my personal use on my computer to be studied offline, say on a plane, that would be difficult to prove as "theft". How has your copyright been diminished? Did they directly compete with some market you were using? Did they make a profit that you were due? Did they create a derivative work that should belong to you? I think the answer is no.

Copyright is not absolute control of your intellectual property.

International SMS is doable. Type (+) then country code. e.g (61) for Australia. Drop the 0 off the beginning of the Aus mobile number. That's it!
Not sure on charging rates for O.S SMS with docomo.

Thanks for your reply Jason!
It seems b-mobile specifically mentions sms for national and international - so that seems somewhat better than buying directly through NTT Docomo then. And as it also mentions facetime, I guess the whole no-facetime-no-international-sms thing is linked.
I think I'll give b-mobile a go. Will post back later with feedback...
Happy new year!

Hi Jake,

No, it seems that MMS doesn't work. SMS works, but only domestically, no international SMS as far as I can tell. iPhone 4s is officially on KDDI now too, which is a better network than Softbank, so that would be one option.

Hi Jason,
Thanks for the information - I am soon moving to Japan and was looking into this.
I was also pointed in the direction of b-mobile, which apparently resells NTT Docomo network. But their page (google translated) seems to indicate no MMS ability.
I am wondering if you managed to get MMS working on your NTT Docomo micro SIM iphone?

hi! interesting post here, always fun to read when someone looks at film and manual cameras with fresh eyes.

if you want to be able to get a feel for exposure times and such, I recommend this site:
http://www.fredparker.com/ultexp1.htm
the sunny sixteen is usually written on the inside of every box of film. it has helped me a great deal with understanding light :)

I was an au user for many years and loved their service coverage. But it wasn't 3G. Couldn't use the iPhone. So I eventually moved over to docomo which my wife and my sponsor were with. I had bought a factory unlocked ip4 on eBay and went into a docomo shop and asked them for a micro sim. They moved my details from the standard sim onto the micro for free. But if I wanted to go back to the standard sim I'll have to pay ¥3000. The iPhone with docomo is great! Awesome coverage!
Data plans: yes it is expensive but I have wifi at home, at work, and there are many open networks around town. I setup the basic mopera lite plan which is a flat ¥530 a month plus the data I use. Charged at ¥0.0048/packet. I never use it! Having the peace of mind knowing it's there when I need it is good for ¥530. And it's fast!! I hate plans that tie you in!
Also alot of the bars I goto have networks that I ask for their passwords.
I say move to docomo first and get the cheapest crappy phone you can and save yr pennys and buy yr iphone outright on eBay or elsewhere, then ask them for a micro sim and your away! No looking back!

I purchased this same Sigma 85mm from Adorama last week and found out my lens has problem with back focusing. I am currently waiting for a replacement from Adorama and I hope they sent me a good copy this time.

It might work if you can jailbreak, the iPad is sim locked to SoftBank. I'm using my unlocked iPhone 4 as a personal hotspot and I get my iPad online that way.

Hi,
Has anyone tried the docomo sim cards in a jailbroken ipad2? Or is there any way to use 3G in Japan with a Softbank ipad that doesn't involve a softbank contract?
Thanks.
